The Importance of Minimalism

In my teen years, I had started to outgrow a lot of my personal belongings. Obtaining materials was not important to me anymore. Whatever I had or received from someone, I was always grateful for but to ask for more was not in my realm.

I had helped my mom's friends out one day, she was going through a divorce at the time and decided to downsize, so she threw a yard sale. The sale had been a success I thought until we went into her house and saw the number of possessions this lady owned my god! She had two unoccupied rooms filled with things up to the ceiling, old books, newspaper, little things here and there but it was piled up! You couldn't even walk in, it was atrocious and not to mention the musty smell of those things being there for years.

My mom's other friend who always helping her out asked her if we can start to organize the room and get rid of more things. I mean in my head, more things to sell, more cha-ching! The woman had become so distraught, the thought of us just touching anything in that room had made her emotional. I didn't understand why she was so possessive until I went home and discussed with my mom the events.

My mom had told me she was a hoarder from what I was describing. At that time, on TLC they aired a show called Hoarders, Buried Alive, I decided to watch a few episodes and just kept thinking of this poor woman and her situation.  My mom told me it was a psychological thing, people having a very hard time letting go of personal possessions, but I didn't realize some people had it this bad.

I had always been an avid cleaner, my room was clean and organized, my mom always instilled that I make the bed in the morning before I start my day. She said the more organized your room, and environment, the more organized your mind will be. I didn't realize the importance until years later but thanks to momma and her pestering me if I hadn't cleaned my room, bed made, I wouldn't be as organized as I am now.

When my boyfriend and I moved into an apartment together, we both agreed the less furniture we have, the better. Of course, all my New Yorkers here know the deal with apartments and how small they run. The more space we had to do whatever, the better. We lucked out and have an amazing space but with the help of less furniture and possessions, we feel even better. We can roam free without bumping into anything and not to mention the 4 closets we have!

You don't realize how much stuff one carries around until you start living with them but honestly guys, the less you have the better! The better it is for your mind and mental health. Minimalism is super important to me because it allows me to be grateful for what I have without the need or want to have more. Open space, good natural lighting, and a few extra plants can really do the trick. If you want to learn more or check out some designs there are so many resources on minimalism and how to design your space.

If you decide to turn your space into more of a minimalist style, I promise you, you will see a change within yourself. It really shows you the importance of not needing a lot, not to mention how much you can save! By going minimalist I learned to be more humble! People do it for many different reasons whether its to show them what they need versus want, more space, whatever it is, but once they switch their lifestyle they don't go back.

My advice to you is to try it! See how you like it!! Instead of throwing everything away too, why not donate! Garage sale, yard sale, earn a few more bucks. You will see the change! Change is good for the soul and necessary.  And remember too when you give away, you will always get back more!:) When going minimalist, you are creating room for what's most important, as well filling up your space with meaning, whether its a bookshelf of your favorite books, or beautiful plants and flowers. You will never see a change until you try it.
